Norvella Burnett

Norvella Lavon (Flickinger) Burnett, 95, of 310 N. 2nd St., Conway Springs, passed away Wednesday, March 8, 2023, at Conway Springs.

Norvella was born June 12, 1927, in Wilson County to Leonard James Flickinger and Florence (Adams) Flickinger. She moved with her family to Conway Springs in March 1943. She finished high school and graduated with the Conway Springs class of 1945.

Norvella married Ray Ellis Burnett on May 7, 1946. To this union were born four children: Linda Rae, Ronald Lee, Marsha Elaine, and Gerald Dwayne. Ray and Norvella celebrated 66 years of marriage before his passing on Oct. 29, 2012. She had lived in the same home for 73 years.

Norvella was baptized in the First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, Conway Springs, on Dec. 2, 1945. She was active in the church and Christian Women’s Fellowship, holding several offices for many years. She served as CWF president for 20 years and deaconess for a number of years. She served as the president of 4th District, 5th Wednesday Christians Women’s Group, District Cabinet, and State Regional Cabinet. She also sang in the church choir for many years.

Norvella served on the Conway Springs City Library Board. She had been a member of the Conway Springs Sorority Club since 1958 and active in the Red Hats Classy Lady Club. She spent many years enjoying the good friends she made within those clubs.

Norvella loved birds and could tell you what bird it was by its song. She also loved the weather and was always calling family with weather updates, even for other states. If the wind changed even slightly, she always was aware and let you know. When Ray retired, he watched sports all the time. Instead of being upset, she became a BIG college basketball fan and a fan of the Kansas City Chiefs. Her son-in-law, Jerry, said how many people have their 95-year-old mother-in-law call them wanting to talk sports. Norvella loved her grandchildren very much and was so happy to visit with them. They were her pride and joy.

Norvella also was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Jesse Leonard Flickinger killed in Korea, and infant brother Charles Arthur; one son, Ronald (Ron) Burnett; one great-grandson, Bryce Alexander Adams (Alec); son-in-law, Neal Harrelson; and sister-in-law, Marlene Flickinger.

She is survived by her children, Linda Adams (Jerry), Marsha Harrelson, and Jerry Burnett (Tammy); brother, Don Flickinger; seven grandchildren, Shelli (Burnett) Yarbrough, Sara Burnett, Chris Adams, Missy Adams Terry, Amanda, Adam, and Jesse Burnett; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She will be greatly missed by family and friends.
