The Derby girls basketball team – ranked No. 8 in Class 6A – turned in a dominating performance in beating the Campus Colts 67-14 last Friday in Haysville.
The Panthers jumped out to a 26-3 lead after the first quarter, and put up 47 first-half points against a struggling Colts squad. Campus managed no more than 5 points in any quarter.
Scoring has been an issue all season for the Colts, who – as of Tuesday afternoon – were still looking for their first win of the season. Their defense has looked good at times this season, but the Panthers were too much as nine different players scored for Derby.
Even though it was a tough defeat for the winless Colts, head coach Ron Allen says the Colts are making incremental improvements. It takes time to turn around a program that has struggled like Campus has.
“We worked on getting the ball inside more, but not as much as we hoped,” he said. “We’re staying the course and seeing some payoffs.”
Allen noted that the Campus freshmen team went down to the wire against Derby’s freshmen.
“Progress isn’t always measured in wins and losses. We’re trying to build a culture,” Allan said.
Campus has a slew of 5A teams on the schedule. The Colts hosted Salina South earlier this week. They will visit Maize South this Friday, and then go to Eisenhower next Tuesday.
Campus: Brylie Laake 4, Mya Free 4, Daisy Cardinale 3, Brooke Pfeiffer 2, Alia Sanchez 1.
