Argonia approves loan for fire department

Staff Report

ARGONIA – At its regular meeting earlier this month, the Argonia City Council gave its approval for a $35,000 loan for the Argonia Fire Department.
The loan, from the Firefighters Relief Fund, will help pay for a variety of equipment. A new ladder, new radios, and a number of other items in need of upgrades or replacements are on the list of items to be purchased.
City leaders also gave their approval for a special liquor license for the OX Bar and Grill for the Argonia Drag Races and Car Show, which will be held in early October. The city council also approved a larger gas meter for the restaurant, which will allow an expansion of its kitchen. Renovations of the local restaurant and bar are ongoing.
The city also approved its 2023 budget. The proposed mill levy of 47.281 mills is down slightly from 2022’s mill levy of 51.123 mills.
In other business:
• The council heard that the fire department has been making a higher-than-normal number of runs. The department has brought on a few new volunteers, and is currently seeking additional volunteers.
• There have been some electrical issues recently at Argonia River Park. The city will need to replace some plugs at the park.
• The city needs to repaint the swimming pool before next season, and is currently seeking bids for the project.
• Council members approved sending two staff members to a natural gas training class.
The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 3.
