Runners start season at Clearwater participation meet

By Travis Mounts

Five local teams participated in Clearwater’s season-opening participation meet last Thursday. There were unlimited entries for teams, and no team scores were kept.
Three different girls’ and boys’ races took place, with a freshman-sophomore 2-mile, a junior-senior 2-mile, and an open 5-kilometer. In addition to Clearwater, Andale-Garden Plain, Cheney, Goddard and the new Conway Springs teams all sent runners.
Clearwater’s Hayley Trotter was the runaway winner of the girls’ junior-senior 2-mile. Trotter, the defending 4A State champion and winner of two individual gold medals at the 2022 State track meet, beat the rest of the field by more than a minute. She just missed breaking the 12-minute mark, with a time of 12:00.49.
Cheney placed three girls in the top 10 of that race, with Abbye Hudson leading the way. She was third in a time of 13:13.13. Kinslee Ingram was seventh, and Tatum Ingram was ninth.
In the 5K races, Conway Springs’ Cheyanne Tull took third in the girls’ race and teammate Sydney Zoglmann 10th. In the boys’ race, Goddard’s Luke Griffith placed 10th.
Garden Plain’s Logan McKim placed fifth in the freshman-sophomore boys’ 2-mile.
This week, Cheney’s runners will compete at Hesston on Thursday. On Saturday, Clearwater, Eisenhower, Goddard and Andale-Garden Plain will compete at Wellington. Clearwater is looking to send a small contingent to Wamego, as well. Conway Springs will run on Saturday in Pratt.
