Eisenhower girls win Hutchinson track meet; Colts runner sets school record

The Eisenhower girls had a strong performance at Gowans Stadium in Hutchinson last Friday, winning the Salthawk Invitational. The Tigers scored 99 points to edge past Maize (95.5) and host Hutchinson (91).
The Campus girls scored 32 points and placed ninth out of 12 teams. The Colts’ day was marked by BreAna Garrett-Tillemans’ record-setting performance in the 800 meters. She won the event and set a new Campus High record in the process, with a time of 2:20.48.
The Eisenhower Boys were seventh with 52 points, and the Campus boys scored 26 to finish 11th.
Leah Wilkinson led the Tigers’ girls, placing in three individual events. She took second in discus and third in shot put. EHS had three girls place in both javelin and shot. Harli Omli gave the Tigers a gold medal in the 400 meters. Makenzie Block placed in a pair of events. Eisenhower had top-three finishes in all three relays.
The boys were led by Cayden Schoenhoff in the 400, Jace McCaffrey in pole vault, and Bennett McCargo in discus. Each placed second in his event.
For Campus, Andrew Howard continues to do well in the hurdles. His best showing was in the 300-meter hurdles, where he placed second. For the girls, Anna Corbet was second in pole vault.
Campus will make a short drive east on Friday to be part of Derby’s home track meet. Events start at 3:30 p.m.
Eisenhower will be at the Goddard home track meet on Friday, starting at 3:30 p.m.

Conway Springs Cardinals show well at Wellington

The Conway Springs Cardinals track and field team turned in some good results at last week’s participation meet at Wellington High School.
Team scores were not kept. The field included Sumner County schools Caldwell, Belle Plaine, Oxford and South Haven, along with Rose Hill and Mulvane.
The girls had several first-place finishes, and some strong combinations in different events. Grace Bender and Natalie Doffing placed first and second in pole vault. Faith Kelly and Katelyn Koester were first and second in shot put, and Gabby Dalbom was fourth. Cheyanne Tull medaled in two events, including winning the 1600 meters. Kenzie Wenke took second in high jump.
Brayden Kunz had a good day for the boys, winning the triple jump and coming in second in the long jump. There were four Cardinals in the top eight in pole vault, led by Zach Johnson, who won the event.
Conway Springs will be at Chaparral High School on Friday. Next week, the Cardinals will be at Garden Plain for the Central Plains League meet.

Goddard boys win East Relays

The Goddard Lions boys track and field team won the Wichita East Relays, held on April 26 and featuring 10 teams. They scored 107 points, which was 9 points better than runner-up Great Bend.
The GHS girls placed fifth out of nine teams, with 48.5 points.
Zane Pepperd and Bradley Bond both had high finishes in a pair of events. Pepperd won both hurdle races, while Bond was first in the discus and second in the shot put. Ryan Bay placed second in high jump. Kendal McElroy and Riley Scoggin both placed in two different individual events.
The Lions will host their annual home meet this Friday at Goddard District Stadium. A dozen other schools are slated to be their, including Eisenhower. Start time is 3:30 p.m.

Raiders run at Central

The Argonia Raiders track and field team were part of a large field on April 26 at Central Burden. There were 18 boys teams and 15 girls teams scoring points. The AHS boys scored 11.5 points and placed 14th. The girls scored 14.5 points and came in 11th.
Argonia goes to Pretty Prairie this Thursday. This meet often serves as a good preview for the Raiders going into their Class 1A regional meet in a couple of weeks.

Records set at shortened Cheney track meet

Several meet records were set at last Friday’s Vernon Ferguson Invitational track and field meet, hosted by Cheney High School. The Clearwater Indians and Garden Plain Owls were among the teams at the annual meet hosted by the Cardinals.
The meet was postponed and eventually halted for good due to inclement weather. The 200 meter finals, the 3200 meters and the 4×400-meter relays were not run. Preliminary times were used to award medals in the 200 meters, but that event did not count in the team points. Team scoring was frozen after the 800 meters.
Brooke Hammond of Garden Plain set a new meet record in the 100 meters, clocking a time of 12.36 seconds.
Cheney’s 4×100 relay team of Amy Wright, Brynn McCormick, Reagan Ayres and Lacy Luehrs also set a new meet record, winning the event with a time of 50.21.
Trinity’s Clay Shively set a new record time in the boys 800 meters at 1:55.17, and the Collegiate boys 4×100 relay set a new record with a time of 43.59.
Will Tice won the discus and javelin for the Garden Plain boys, and Hammond swept the girls sprints by winning the 100 and 200 meters.
Cheney swept the high jump, with Luke Grace winning the boys and Breanna Wells winning the girls events. Grace won all the jumps, also placing first in the long jump and high jump.
Clearwater shined in the girls hurdles. Madison Williams and Kenzy McArtor placed first and second in the 300 hurdles. Hayley Trotter won both the 800 and 1600 meters. For the boys, Mason Seiter and Brett Gibbs both placed in multiple events.
Garden Plain, Cheney and Clearwater grabbed five of the top seven spots in the 100-meter hurdles. Clearwater’s Williams placed first while McArtor was third. Garden Plain’s Celia Puetz was second, and Abby Redmon finished fifth. Cheney’s Brynn McCormick was fourth.
Garden Plain swept the team titles. The Garden Plain girls scored 110 points in victory, while Cheney was second with 95 points. Scott City was third with 84, and Clearwater took fourth with a score of 67 points.
The Owls won the boys’ competition with 93 points. Cheney was fifth (47.5) and Clearwater placed ninth (20). There were 17 boys teams that scored points, and 14 girls teams.
Cheney will take part in the Hesston meet this Thursday, starting at 3:30 p.m. Clearwater travels to Circle on Thursday for a 3 p.m. meet.
This Friday, Garden Plain goes to Remington. Events begin at 3 p.m.
Cheney and Garden Plain will be at Garden Plain next Thursday, along with Conway Springs, to compete in the Central Plains League track meet.
