Oleta LaVerne “Vernie” Schilling passed away on Saturday, Dec. 11, 2021. She was a resident of Haysville.
Rosary will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 16, and funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 17, both at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Haysville.
Vernie was born, the youngest of seven children, on Aug. 7, 1934, in Lowe, Kan., to Arnold and Gladys Call. She grew up on the family farm in Chautauqua County. Vernie graduated as salutatorian from Sedan High School in 1952, and attended the University of Kansas in 1953-1954. In 1958, Vernie married her devoted husband Robert “Bob” Schilling. They were married 45 years. He preceded her in death in 2003.
Vernie enjoyed her career as a secretary in the human resources department of KG&E in Wichita from 1954 until her retirement in 1992. Vernie’s interests included spending time with family, reading, shopping, cooking, quilting and watching sports of any kind. She also was known for her sense of style. She was a member of St Cecilia Catholic Church in Haysville since 1980. She would sing in the choir, lector and serve as the rosary leader at Diversicare in Haysville.
Vernie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three brothers; and three sisters and their spouses. She is survived by many loving nieces and nephews, and wonderful friends.
