Laura Walker


Laura A. (Haskins) Walker, age 99, of Clearwater, retired USD 264 teacher, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2021.
Laura was born on Saturday, Aug. 19, 1922, in Nash, Okla. She was the third of six children born to Perl and Verda (Roderick) Haskins. She attended school in Gore, Okla. Laura received her State of Kansas teaching certificate in 1942. She taught in Harper County from 1942 to 1946. She graduated from Northwestern University, Alva, Okla., in 1947.
Laura was united in marriage to Elden Lawrence Walker on Aug. 20, 1946, in Hardtner, Kan. They began their life in Syracuse, Kan., in 1946 where she taught elementary school from 1947 to1949. In 1949, they moved back to Hardtner and started a family. From 1954 to 1961 she taught in a one-room school house (grades 1-8) just south of Medicine Lodge. From 1963 to 1969, she taught in Hardtner. Then they moved to Haysville in 1969, and finally to Clearwater in 1974. From 1969 to 1987, she taught in the Clearwater USD 264 school system. During the last years of her career, she was the grade school librarian.
Laura was very involved in the Clearwater Church of Christ, helping out with meals and other activities. She was also involved with Silver Maple Camp as the cook for many years.
Laura was always helping others wherever possible. She loved sewing, gardening and reading. Her favorite books were the Laura Ingalls Wilder and Janette Oke books.
Laura was preceded in death by her husband, Elden, on Aug. 5, 2008; parents, Perl and Verda (Roderick) Haskins; siblings, Homer and Lloyd Haskins, Vera Readnour, Stella McDowell and Doris Chastain; and granddaughters, Christie Koss and Shelly J. Valcoure. Survivors include her children, James (Sandra) Walker of West Plains, Mo., Ellen (Lonnie) Schwindaman of Wichita, Sheila (Nancy Veach) Walker of Aubry, Texas, and Kevin Walker of Waxahachie, Texas; 12 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
