Garrett Denning, a junior on the Campus boys track and field team, won gold at last Thursday’s Class 6A State track and field meet, which took place at Cessna Stadium.
Denning won the 300-meter huredles with a time of 40.26, finishing at the top of a group of four hurdlers who finished within a second of each other. Also in that group was teammate Andrew Howard, another junior, who placed fourth.
The duo also competed in the 110-meter hurdles, although only Denning advanced to finals where he placed seventh.
Isaac Whitson, another Campus junior, placed third in the triple jump. His best attempt was 42-4.75, which tied Manhattan’s Jason Moran. Whitson beat Moran on their second-best jumps, with Whitson’s jump of 42-1 beating Moran by 3/4-inch.
The Campus girls will look to build their team the next couple of years around two athletes who each qualified for a pair of events.
BreAna Garrett-Tillemans competed in the 400 and 800 meters, medaling in the 400 with a sixth-place finish. Carpenter ran in the 1600 and 3200, but did not medal.
With 23 team points, the Campus boys finished as a team in the top half of the standings, placing 14th out of 30 teams scoring points.
