The Campus Colts grabbed three individual titles at last week’s 6A regional in Garden City, and the Colts qualified for the State meet in 11 different events. The top four in each event advance to State.
This year’s Colts team is built on youth, creating a lot of hope for the future. Madelyn Carpenter, a sophomore, qualified for State in the 1600 and 3200. She didn’t get to compete in track last year, but had a good cross country season last fall, said head track coach Brett Marrs.
“I think she kind of surprised herself,” he said.
Another strong newcomer is BreAna Garrett Tillemans. She broke the school’s 400 meters record her first time out, and has not looked back. The old record was 63.1 seconds, and she ran 60.2.
“She didn’t just break it, she smashed it,” Marrs said. “Since then, she’s only gotten better.”
Garrett-Tillemans won the 400 at regionals and was second in the 800.
Ashley Cockram, a senior, has spent four years trying to get to State, and made it as a senior. She and Jordan Jackson are the only seniors on the girls team. Jackson missed going to State by a half-second, clipping the final hurdle in the 100-meter hurdles. She was on pace for a personal best, and still placed fifth.
“That was her best race all year,” Marrs said.
Garrett Denning and Andrew Howard finished in the top three in both hurdles races, with Denning winning the 300 hurdles. Both are juniors on a boys team that will return everyone next year.
“They’ll be great leaders for us next year,” Marrs said.
Isaac Whitson improved his personal best in triple jump by 2 feet, which was good enough to win the event. Marrs said the event has been tough all year, with wind and rain a factor at most meets.
“We knew he could do it,” Marrs said.
The Campus boys and girls teams both placed sixth in the nine-team field. The girls scored 58 points, while the boys scored 52.
Campus is scheduled to compete at State track on Thursday, when 6A and 5A will kick off the State track and field meet. This year’s event is being held over three days, with two different classes taking part each day.
