Even though the Sedgwick County Commission rescinded its mask mandate on Wednesday, March 24, under pressure from pending legislation from the Kansas Legislature, Sedgwick County residents are still under a mask mandate, although only until next week.
That's because a statewide mandate issued by Gov. Laura Kelly in November is still in effect.
That distinction was made by county officials on Thursday.
The governor's executive order No. 20-68, issued on Nov. 18, requires peole to wear masks in public spaces.
“This executive order applied to counties that did not have a local mask order already in place. At the time, Sedgwick County had a local health order in place; therefore, the governor's order did not apply,” it was noted in a county statement. Counties also had the option to opt out of the governor's order.
The statewide mask mandate that is part of Order No. 20-68 will expire on March 31.
