Lions going for seventh straight wrestling title

The Goddard Lions boys wrestling team took another big step toward its seventh State title in a row last Saturday by winning the Class 5A substate that it hosted.
The Lions won the substate title with 206 points, a whopping 74 1/2 points ahead of runner-up Maize.
“It was a good weekend,” Goddard coach Brett Means said. “We need to stay focused for another week. I am lucky to be blessed with such a talented and focused group of young men and women.”
The Lions girls also will send two wrestlers to the Class 6-5A tournament Thursday at Hartman Arena (see separate story).
At Goddard, five Lions won individual substate titles last Saturday — Jerrdon Fisher (145 pounds), Jace Fisher (152), Nolan Craine (170), Logan Davidson (182) and Kaden Glass (195) — while three more made the finals as Jayden Miller (113), Zach Wessley (132) and Cayleb Atkins (160) each took second.
Those eight wrestlers, plus Levi Glover (third, 106 pounds) and Isaiah Holmes (fourth, 138) are all headed to the Class 5A State tournament Friday at Hartman Arena in Park City. Brayden Wickliffe (285 pounds) finished one win shy of heading to State, taking fifth last Saturday.
“Like everyone else,  we need to stay healthy and focused to compete at our highest level possible,” Means said.
