The Cheney girls basketball team rolled through three different opponents en route to the Cardinal Classic championship, which the Cardinals secured on Saturday night with a 60-27 win over the Chaparral Roadrunners.
The Cardinals have been scoring a lot of points, but their defense was the key to victory in all of last week’s wins, especially the Roadrunners when they gave up just 10 first-half points while building a 24-point lead.
“I’m very pleased with the kids coming off the bench,” said Cheney head coach Rod Scheer. He said the bench has contributed at both ends, scoring points and grabbing rebounds. That includes getting scoring from 10 different players in Thursday’s win over El Dorado
Kylee Scheer is Cheney’s top scorer early. She led the Cardinals in all three games, averaging more than 22 per game. Brynn McCormick scored in double figures twice. She made five 3-point baskets against Chaparral.
The Cardinals opened this week at Trinity Academy in Wichita. The girls will have the spotlight to themselves when they host the Wichita Warriors on Thursday night. The varsity game starts at 7:30 p.m.
Cheney remains ranked No. 1 in Class 3A with a 4-0 record.
Cheney: Kylee Scheer 20, Brynn McCormick 11, Leah Durr 6, Lacy Luehrs 5, Anna Martin 5, Olivia Albers 5, Brooklyn Wewe 4, Campbell Hague 4.
