Local tennis teams competed at regionals on Saturday, fighting for spots at State tournaments.
The Conway Springs team won a regional championship at home, with the Cardinals claiming both the doubles and singles titles. Loren May won the regional singles championship without dropping a set. In the doubles championship match, Lucy Boyles and Hayley Osner recovered after dropping a 1-6 first set, winning the second set 7-5 to level the match, and the third set 6-4 to win it.
In addition to the above players, Molly Bender will go to Class 3-2-1A State on the strength of her fourth-place finish.
The Campus Colts will send both of their doubles teams to State. Logan Johnson and Taylor Rardin faced Erin Jackson and Savanna Schmidt in the third-place match, with Johnson and Rardin coming out on top after dropping the first set.
Goddard’s high schools, Eisenhower and Goddard, did not send any qualifiers to 5A State.
The GHS doubles team of Raegan LeFevre and Alyssa Rising nearly beat eventual fourth-place finishers Hilary Tallman and McKinnley Evans of Andover Central, falling 10 points to 5 in a match tiebreak after splitting two sets.
For Eisenhower, Annabelle Aldrete and the doubles team of Rachel and Angela Davis got match wins before falling to higher-ranked players.
The Class 6A State Tournament will be held Friday and Saturday at the College Boulevard Activity Center in Olathe. The Class 3-2-1A State Tournament will be held Friday and Saturday at the Riverside Tennis Complex in Wichita. For both events, competition begins at 9:30 a.m. on Friday and at 9:20 a.m. on Saturday.
