Lucille V. (Melson) Ellis, 83, formerly of Conway Springs, died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2019, in Wichita.
She was born May 8, 1936, at Baltimore, Md., to Alvin James Melson and Margaret Virginia (Burke) Melson. Lucille moved with her family to many areas as a child. Her family lived in Hutchinson, Tucson, Ariz., and eventually Pratt. Lucille graduated from Pratt High School with the class of 1954. She continued her education and attended nurses training at St. Mary’s of the Plains and St. Joseph Hospital in Wichita.
Lucille was united in marriage to Charles Walter Ellis on Nov. 29, 1957, in Pratt. They moved to Conway Springs on Nov. 27, 1959, following the purchase of the local telephone exchange by his family. Lucille worked as the school nurse for USD 356. She later worked in the local office alongside Charles at Haviland Telephone Company for many years. The couple retired in December 1991. Charles passed away Jan. 19, 2019.
Lucille was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Conway Springs, where she was active in the Presbyterian Women. She had also served on the Conway Springs Volunteer Ambulance Service as an EMT for many years.
Lucille also was preceded in death by her parents; one brother ,A. J. Melson; and one son, Dale Ellis.
She is survived by two daughters, Elaine Ellis of Belleview, Neb., and Lisa Bittle and husband Leland of Andover; one son, Kenneth Ellis of Wichita; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a number of other relatives and friends.
Graveside memorial service will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17, in Conway Springs Cemetery (Second Addition), Conway Springs, with Pastor Jason Lowery officiating. Inurnment will follow at Conway Springs Cemetery, Conway Springs.
