Teams get ready for tournaments

It’s boys tournament week plus two, as the Goddard girls also will play next week (Jan. 14-19) at Neodesha. As usual, the Argonia boys and girls will be part of the South Central Border League tournament next week, as they play simultaneously in that tournament in Arkansas City. The rest of the girls tournaments will be Jan. 21-26.

Editor’s note: The times for the Spring Hill Invitational have been changed, and further changes are possible. There have been major changes to the SCBL tournament, too, with ALL semifinal games on Thursday at either Arkansas City or Udall. All Saturday games will be played on Friday, either at Arkansas City or Udall. The latest information is reflected below.


Adolph Rupp Boys Basketball Tournament – Halstead

Cheney and Garden Plain are long-time participants at the Rupp tourney, and are back for the 49th annual edition. First-round games are Monday and Tuesday.

Garden Plain (1-7) is the No. 8 team and will play No. 1 Andale (6-1), which is the Owls district cousins as well as the defending champion. That game tips off at about 7:30 p.m. Monday. The other half of that bracket features No. 4 Haven (6-3) vs. No. 5 Rose Hill (6-3). The winning teams will play at 6 p.m. Friday, while the losing teams face off at 6 p.m. Thursday.

No. 2 Cheney (7-2) opens at 6 p.m. Tuesday against No. 7 Winfield (1-6). Cheney was runner-up in 2018. Tuesday’s other game features No. 3 Minneapolis (7-2) vs. No. 6 Halstead (6-3). The winners will play at 7:30 p.m. Friday, while the losing teams will play at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Saturday’s game times are: 7th place, 2 p.m.; 5th place, 3:30 p.m.; 3rd place, 6 p.m.; championship, 8 p.m.


Ralph Miller Classic – Chanute

Goddard has been heading east to Chanute for a number of years. The Lions (0-6) will open up against Olathe North (6-1) at 6:15 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17. The winner will play at 8 p.m. Friday against either Emporia (6-3) or Chanute (5-3). The losing teams will play at 4:45 p.m. Friday.

The other half of the bracket features Andover Central (6-0) vs. Leavenworth (3-3), and Republic (10-3) vsw. Field Kindley (5-4).

Saturday’s final-round games are: 7th place, 2 p.m.; 5th place, 3:45 p.m.; 3rd place, 5:15 p.m.; championship, 7 p.m.


Roadrunner Classic – Chaparral

Five of the eight teams at this year’s Roadrunner Classic have winning records. Clearwater and Conway Springs are both in this field.

No. 5 Clearwater (4-3) will play No. 4 Chaparral (6-3) at 8 p.m. Wednesday. The other Wednesday game features No. 1 Belle Plaine (9-0) against No. 8 Mulvane (1-7). The losing teams will play at 3 p.m. Friday, and the winners will tip off at 6:30 p.m. Friday.

No. 7 Conway Springs (3-6) will take on No. 2 Arkansas City (7-1) at 6 p.m. Thursday. The day’s other games has No. 3 Kingman (7-2) facing No. 6 Wellington (3-5). The losing teams will play at 4:30 p.m. Friday, and the winners will play at 8 p.m. Friday.

Saturday’s games times are: 7th place, 1 p.m.; 5th place, 2:30 p.m.; 3rd place, 4:30 p.m.; championship, 6 p.m.


Wilson County “Gerald Hutchison Memorial” Classic

Goddard will make its debut in this tournament in Neodesha. The tournament has both girls and boys brackets playing next week.

The No. 1 Lions (7-0) will face No. 8 Fredonia (1-8) at 5 p.m. Monday in the south gym. The other game in that half of the bracket has No. 4 Girard (5-1) playing No. 5 Yates Center (5-3). The winners will play at 5 p.m. Tuesday, while the losing teams play at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday.

The other half of the bracket has No. 2 Bluestem (8-1) playing No. 7 Neodesha (2-5), and No. 3 Cherryvale (6-1) vs. No. 6 Iola (4-3) on Monday.

The seventh place game will be at 7:45 p.m. Thursday, and the fifth-place game at 6 p.m. Thursday. The third-place game will be at 4:45 p.m. Friday, and the championship at 6:30 p.m. Friday.


Spring Hill Invitational – Spring Hill

The Eisenhower Tigers will open the tournament against East Christian Academy of Kansas City at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday. The winner will face either Spring Haill or Schlagle at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, while the losing teams will play at 4:45 p.m. Thursday. The other half of the bracket features Blue Valley Southwest vs. Veritas Christian, and Sumner Academy vs. Olathe South.

Final-round games will be on Friday: 7th place, 3 p.m.; 5th place, 4:45 p.m.; 3rd place, 6:30 p.m.; championship, 8:15 p.m.


SCBL Touranment – Cowley College

The South Central Border League boys and girls tournament takes in the top eight teams in the 10-team league, and the final two seeds are determined by play-in games.

The No. 8 Argonia boys will face No. 9 Oxford on Saturday, Jan. 12, at Udall as part of play-tin Saturday. The other play-in game features No. 7 Flinthills vs. No. 10 Central Burden. The bracket will be finalized after Saturday’s play-in games. The top seeds are, in order: Caldwell, Cedar Vale-Dexter, Udall, Sedan, West Elk and South Haven. The boys first-round games will be Monday.

On the girls’ side, Argonia is seeded No. 2 and will play at either 5 or 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. The Raiders’ opponent will be determined by Saturday’s play-in games. The top seeds are West Elk, Argonia, Flinthills, South Haven, Sedan and Caldwell. The play-in games feature No. 7 Udall vs. No. 10 Central, and No. 8 Oxford vs. No. 9 Cedar Vale-Dexter.


Bluestem Classic – El Dorado

The Campus Colts are seeded No. 2 at the 51st annual Bluestem Classic, hosted by El Dorado High School. Campus (7-1) plays the late game during Thursday’s first-round, taking on Gardner-Edgerton (2-7) at 8:15 p.m. The winner will take on either No. 3 Collegiate (5-3) or No. 6 El Dorado (2-7) at 6:30 p.m. Friday. The losing teams will play at 4:45 p.m. Friday.

The other half of the bracket features No. 1 Wichita Trinity (9-0) playing No. 8 Great Bend (2-7), and No. 4 Circle (4-4) facing No. 5 Kapaun-Mt. Carmel (3-6). Final round games are on Saturday: 7th place, 1:30 p.m.; 5th place, 3:15 p.m.; 3rd place, 5 p.m.; championship, 6:45 p.m.
