The Argonia Raiders volleyball team is a regional champion. The Raiders won the Caldwell regional on Tuesday, Oct. 16, to advance to Saturday’s substate tournament at Flinthills High School in Rosalia.
As the top seed (35-1), the Raiders earned a first-round bye. In the semifinal, they beat South Central Border League rival South Haven 25-11, 25-13, and in the final rolled over the host Caldwell Bluejays 25-9, 25-13.
This year for volleyball and basketball, Class 1A has returned to the regional-substate-State format, where teams must get through two tournaments to make it to State. This is a return to the model used before 1A split into two divisions several years ago. The 1A divisions were abandoned as part of a broader shuffling by the Kansas State High School Activities Association members that impacted all classes and sports and activities.
The regional tournament utilize eight-team brackets, although many have just six or seven teams, with top teams earning first-round byes. Eight four-team substates are being played Tuesday, with two substates at each of four locations. Only the regional champions move on the substate, and only the substate champs earn a State berth.
