James E. May, 84, died Saturday, May 26, 2018, at his home near Conway Springs.
He was born June 4, 1933, near Wichita, to Bernard May and Cecelia Josephine (Ebenkamp) May. Jim grew up in the Conway Springs community and attended St. Joseph Catholic School. He began working at a very young age.
Jim enlisted in the U.S. Army on Aug. 22, 1955, where he served his country in France. He was honorably discharged onå Aug. 7, 1958.
Jim was united in marriage to Donna Kathleen Crowell on Sept. 3, 1960, at Conway Springs. They made their home in Conway Springs, where they raised their family.
Jim worked for R & E Construction before starting his career with the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier in Wichita in 1966. He retired in 1996 and began working for USD 356 in Conway Springs as a school bus driver for the next 13 years. He also worked in maintenance for St. Joseph Catholic School during this time.
Jim was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Conway Springs. In 1977, he was elected to the Conway Springs City Council, where he served four terms. He was also a 50-year member of the National Association of Letter Carriers.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Robert and Richard May; and two infant sons: Joseph Robert May and Kevin John May.
He is survived by his wife, Donna, and his family: Gina Doll (Kevin), Jimmy May, and Amber Soliman (Mohamed), all of Conway Springs; Michael May (Kelly) of Wichita; one brother, Donald May of El Dorado; two sisters, Jean Shobe of Conway Springs and Marilyn Spohr of Denver; 20 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a number of other relatives and many friends.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 31, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Conway Springs, with Father Stuart M. Smeltzer as Celebrant. Vigil was at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 30, also at the church. Interment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Conway Springs.
