Five local ball teams won their regional tournaments. Here’s a look at all the regional baseball and softball results.
Class 3A at Cheney
Cheney used its home field advantage – and a first-round bye as the regional’s top seed – to win a 3A regional crown on its home field. Cheneyh needed just five innings to beat No. 5 Hesston 12-2 on Wednesday afternoon then run-ruled No. 3 Haven 11-1 in six innings. Hesston had beaten No. 4 Chaparral on Monday. Haven got to the title game with wins over No. 6 Belle Plaine 10-0 and then 12-0 in five innings over No. 7 Halstead, which opened the tournament with a 2-1 upset of No. 2 Sedgwick.
Class 4A-Div. II at Clearwater
Clearwater lost its regional opener on Tuesday, falling 6-3 to No. 1 seed Trinity Academy, which went on to beat Collegiate 2-1 to advance to the 4A-Div. II State tournament. The Indians finish the season with a 9-12 record. Tuesday’s tournament was moved from Clearwater to Maize South High School due to field conditions at CHS cause by Monday’s inclement weather.
Class 4A-Div. I at Augusta
No. 3 Andale-Garden Plain (14-7) advanced with a 9-1 win over No. 2 Augusta (14-6) on Monday, and then had to wait until Thursday to play the championship game, where No. 1 Andover Central won 5-2. Andover Central’s opener against started on Monday, but was delayed until Wednesday because of weather. Andover Central beat No. 4 Circle 14-7. Also Monday, Circle had beaten No. 5 El Dorado in a play-in game.
Class 5A at Maize South
No. 11 seed Goddard’s season came to an end Monday in a 7-1 loss to No. 6 Maize. The Lions end their season with an 8-13 record. Maize then beat No. 3 Maize South 5-3 in Monday’s regional championship to earn a spot at 5A State. Maize South had beaten No. 14 Topeka West earlier Monday.
Class 5A at Westurban
Eisenhower lost its regional opener 8-2 to Bishop Carroll on Tuesday at Westurban in Wichita. Bishop Carroll, the No. 2 seed in 5A West, went on to beat Valley Center and advance to the 5A State tournament. The Tigers end their season with a 5-16 record. Read more in this week’s Times-Sentinel.
Class 6A at Haysville
The Campus Colts are heading to the 6A State tournament next week in Lawrence. The Colts won the regional they hosted with a pair of shutouts, beating Hutchinson in the first round 10-0 before taking down Junction City 9-0 in the championship. Class 3A at Douglass
Top seed Cheney (19-3) will cruised to an 8-1 win over No. 2 Belle Plaine (13-5) in the championship of the 3A regional at Douglass. As the No. 1 seed, the Cardinals had a first-round bye. In Tuesday’s semifinal, Cheney won 8-3 over No. 4 Eureka, which had opened with a 13-9 win over No. 5 Caney Valley. Belle Plaine got into the title game with a close 6-5 win over host and No. 3 seed Douglass, which topped Elk Valley 12-2 in the opener. Belle Plaine dispatched No. 7 Chaparral 9-1 in the first round. Weather force two of three first-round games from Monday to Tuesday, which meant the championship game was delayed from Tuesday to Wednesday.
Class 4A-Div. II at Girard
A 5-run seventh inning helped No. 2 Frontenac to a 5-0 win over No. 3 Clearwater at the 4A-Div. II regional in Girard. The Indians played well, shutting down Frontenac for six innings. But after Frontenac’s seventh-inning outburst, Clearwater could only muster a single base runner in the game’s final half-inning. The Indians end the season with a 7-14 record. Class 4A-Div. I at Andale
Andale-Garden Plain is heading to 4A-Div. II State after beating Rose Hill 4-1 in Monday’s regional hosted at Andale. No. 1 Andale-GP (18-4) advanced to the title game with a 12-0 win over No. 4 Mulvane (7-14), and No 2 Rose Hill (15-7) also opened with a 12-0 win, over No. 3 Ulysses (11-10).
Class 5A at Goddard
No. 3 Goddard enjoyed home field advantage, opening up Wednesday’s 5A regional with a 12-2 victory over winless Newton. Goddard then beat No. 6 Kapaun-Mt. Carmel 8-0. The Lions flirted with a run-rule win in the fifth and sixth innings, but closed out win in regulation a short time later. Kapaun beat Wichita Heights 12-2 in the first round.
Class 5A at Andover
No. 5 Eisenhower won its regional at Andover with a convincing 7-0 win over No. 4 Andover, the host team. Eisenhower also notched a 7-0 victory in the first round, eliminating league rival No. 12 Valley Center. Andover topped No. 13 Salina Central 14-0 in the first round.
Class 6A at Derby
The No. 8 Campus Colts (11-9), suffered a minor upset when No. 9 Topeka (9-11) earned a 9-1 win over the Colts at the 6A regional in Derby. Campus ends the season with an 11-10 record. Read more in this week’s Haysville Sun-Times.
