Katie M. Simon, 90, of Conway Springs, died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2018 at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice at Via Christi-St. Francis, Wichita.
Katie was born Feb. 7, 1928, at Pawnee Station, Kan. She was one of 11 children born to Chester and Ettie (Hawkins) Harvey. She moved a great deal with her family and grew up in eastern Kansas.
Katie was later united in marriage to Delmar Anthony Simon on July 16, 1966, in Wichita. They made their home in Conway Springs, where they raised their family.
Katie, along with Delmar, was active in her children’s lives. They were leaders in the local scout troop where Katie served as a den mother for Troop 809 in Conway Springs. As a member of the Baptist faith, Katie was a Sunday school teacher at the First Baptist Church, as well as active in the church in many capacities for many years. Delmar died on Sept. 8, 1989.
Katie enjoyed nature, especially birds, horses, flowers and pretty rocks. She loved the outdoors and working in her yard. She liked to walk and could be seen strolling downtown most days, as well as along many blocks around Conway Springs. Most of all, Katie loved and was loved by her family. She would do anything for any of them.
Katie was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers; four sisters; and one son, Joseph Simon.
She is survived by one son, Darren Simon of Conway Springs; one daughter, Cindy Shaw and husband Mark of Seattle; two sisters, Bonita Wrestler of Chanute, and Joan Ellis of Fort Riley; four grandchildren, Stephen, Rachel and Sarah Shaw, and Jennifer Simon; two great-grandchildren, Valiant Twohachet and Addison Shaw; and a number of other relatives and friends.
