Done too soon: Bishop Carroll ends Goddard’s State title hopes

By Travis Mounts

This season won’t be the one when the Goddard Lions finally earn a State championship in football.

The Bishop Carroll Golden Eagles – ranked third in Class 5A and seeded second in the West playoffs – handed the Lions 29-17 defeat in Friday’s semifinal.

The defeat was the first all season for the Lions, who were the top seed in the West playoffs and the No. 1-ranked team in all of 5A.

It was a doubly-tough loss for the Lions, who were trying to return to the 5A championship to atone for last year’s 1-point, double-overtime title game loss to Mill Valley, the two-time defending State champion.

Five turnovers – including three in the first quarter – hurt the Lions, but the damage could have been worse. Of the the three first-quarter turnovers – two interceptions and a fumble – only the first interception led to points for Bishop Carroll.
