CHENEY – A man was arrested around noon Thursday after firing a handgun outside D’Mario’s Pizza and Cheney Lanes.

According to Sgt. Terry Litton of the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office, a Cheney Lanes employee called 911 at 11:44 a.m. to report that a man inside the restaurant was acting bizarre and appeared intoxicated.

At one point, the man lay down on the floor inside the restaurant, Litton said. The man had entered through a rear, employees-only door and walked through an employees-only area.

At 11:47 a.m., the employee called 911 again to report that the man had a handgun.

“The individual stumbled outside and fired his gun” near the south side of the building, Litton said. “He had a small injury like a powder flash around his face. He says he was trying to unload, but people who know guns know that you wouldn’t typically point your gun at your face (when unloading it).”

Cheney police were first to arrive at the scene. Sheriff’s deputies, Goddard and Kansas Highway Patrol officers also responded.

The man apparently arrived at Cheney Lanes in a truck that was towing a camper trailer. Both tires were missing off one side of the trailer.

The suspect is in sheriff’s custody and is being charged with reckless discharge of a firearm and possession of drug paraphernalia. Nobody was hurt during the incident.
