Three local teams play tonight in State tournament action.
The Cheney girls and boys and the Eisenhower boys all won their first-round games and have semifinal games Friday. All are guaranteed to play Saturday, too, in either championship games or third-place contests.
The No. 6 seed Cheney girls (20-4) tip off at 6:30 p.m. against No. 2 Thomas More Prep (23-1) at the Hutchinson Sports Arena. Cheney lost its first two games of the season and have gone 20-2 since then. They won in two overtime in their substate semifinal, and have won six straight.
The No. 8 seed Cheney boys (15-9) face No. 4 Southeast of Saline (19-5) at 8:15 p.m. Friday at the Hutchinson Sports Arena. In the last three games, the Cardinals have beaten the No. 2-ranked team (Hesston) and the No. 3-ranked team (Norton), with the win over Norton coming Thursday at State. The No. 2 seed at 3A State, Galena, also was upset by a Central Plains League team, Belle Plaine.
The No. 1 seed Eisenhower Tigers (22-1) take on No. 4 Shawnee Heights (20-3) at 8:15 p.m. Friday at the Kansas Expocentre in Topeka. The Tigers won on Thursday, their first State tournament win. Eisenhower had lost three previous times in the first round. The Tigers have qualified for State four times in the six-year history of their program.
KXKU 106.1 FM will have live radio broadcasts of the Cheney boys and girls. You can also hear their broadcasts on their website or on their mobile app.
Eisenhower’s games and both Cheney games also can be streamed online at 810varsity.com. There is not a radio broadcast of the Tigers in the Wichita area Friday night.
