The Cheney girls and boys basketball teams and the Eisenhower boys team are getting ready for this week’s State tournaments.
The Cardinals swept the 3A substate at Garden Plain, where it was an all-Central Plains League set of finals. The Cheney girls defeated rival Garden Plain, while the boys knocked off another CPL rival, Conway Springs. Eisenhower, the top seed in its substate and the top-ranked team in Class 5A, beat Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League rival Maize.
The Cheney girls, seeded sixth, managed to avoid a first-round match against Hugoton (23-0) and Thomas More Prep (22-1). The Cardinals (19-4) will play No. 3 Council Grove (21-1_ at 8:15 p.m. Wednesday at the Hutchinson Sports Arena on the Hutchinson Community College campus. The winner will face either No. 2 TMP or No. 7 Independent (16-7) at 6:30 p.m. Friday. The other side of the bracket has No. 1 Hugoton playing No. 8 Riley County (15-8) and No. 4 Humboldt (21-2) taking on No. 7 Nemaha Central (19-3).
The Cheney and Eisenhower boys both play 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
The Cardinals (14-9) are seeded eighth and will play No. 1 Norton (21-1) at the Hutchinson Sports Arena. The winner advances to face No. 4 Southeast of Saline (18-5) or No. 5 Hugoton (17-6) at 8:15 p.m. Friday. The other side of the bracket features No. 2 Galena (20-3) against No. 7 Belle Plaine (15-8) and No. 3 Marysville (19-4) against No. 6 Silver Lake (17-6).
The Tigers (21-1) are the top seed in this year’s 5A tournament. Eisenhower will face No. 8 Bishop Carroll (12-10) at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. The Golden Eagles are coming off a marathon five overtime, 103-102 victory over rival Kapaun-Mt. Carmel in their substate final. Thursday’s winner will take on either No. 4 Shawnee Heights (19-3) or No. 5 St. Thomas Aquinas (18-4) at 8:15 p.m. Friday. The other half of the bracket has No. 2 Salina Central (20-2) vs No. 7 KC Schlagle (16-6) and No. 3 Pittsburg (20-2) against No. 6 Wichita Heights (17-5).
